1) Elohim

Updated: Mar 14, 2021

Genesis 1:26 (ESV) Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Welcome to our first name to map! Please don't worry whether you're doing it "right" or not. You'll get the hang of it. Poke around the blog and maybe it will give you ideas what to write. Doing a word study might feel like you're back in school, writing down vocab words and definitions. This does help us learn! Did you know the Hebrew word for man is "adam"?

Elohim is awesome, almighty, powerful, our Creator God. If the Bible had stopped there and Elohim had been the only name used to refer to God, that would already be an amazing name. What strikes me is the contrast to Yahweh. I'm skipping ahead into Exodus 6:2-3 where Elohim tells Moses, "I AM the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them." Israel's forefathers knew God, but it wasn't until Moses that God disclosed His name Yahweh. I'm excited for this journey as we view God from different "look out points."

What amazed me about this study was the Hebrew word for "Let us make". It is asa. My youngest daughter has "changed her name" from Lisa to Asa. I wasn't super happy about that, but when I saw that asa is what Elohim said as "they" were creating each day, it filled me with excitement. Our creative daughter is also Asa - made in God's image to create art as He created the world, and her. I am looking for the image of God in those around me, and trying to affirm Him in them! (Here is a picture Asa made for me for Christmas)
