11: God's View of You / What's True About You

Beholding...

How do you describe yourself on your Facebook bio or other social media? This chapter addresses our identity in terms of how God views us. I think of the song that I enjoy singing in church, Who You Say I Am (listen and see words here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjWvbV6ohVc ). Take a moment to listen and reflect. "I am chosen, not forsaken, I am who you say I am" (Hillsong) and that's the best identity we can have.

Becoming...

Have you ever played the Purse Game? There are variations (scavenger hunt, Bingo, or team play) of this common bridal/baby shower game in which the basic objective is to be the first participant to fulfill a checklist with items found in her purse. It can be hilarious when someone has something out of the ordinary... for example when a lady happens to have an old piece of toast in her purse and she explains a funny story why. Part of this game helps guests get to know one another by illustrating what is important to a woman that she would carry it in her purse (if we were to play the Purse Game, I always carry a tape measure). Anyhoo... let's get back to the topic of this becoming section. What you carry in your heart, is what's true about you. The author uses the example of the psalmist who so treasures the Word of God that he hides it in his heart (page 152). We know as believers, that who we are isn't the stuff we have or the roles we play. But there are times when we tend to grab a hold of something earthly instead of our Savior. "Dear believer, let's travel light, carrying only what is true and worthy of possessing" (page 155).
